What is the difference between a coach, counsellor and therapist?

While all aim to provide support and can be great tools that one may find beneficial, the areas of focus are different.

A coach focuses on the present and future to guide and support you toward a desired goal. A counsellor and therapist focus more on the past working through life challenges and long-held patterns and can support mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, addiction, disordered eating and PTSD.

What can working with a coach do for me?

A coach can help you create desired shifts in your life, whether that be working towards a goal, or calling in a manifestation, so that you can start living the life you dream of experiencing. If you feel stuck and/or are ready to create a desired change in your life, coaching can help you move past your blocks and step into your highest potential. Consider a coach a support system to cheer you on, but also hold you accountable. Coaching can be used for both big and small changes in your life. If you’re looking to level up and create change and would like some support then working with a coach is a great option.

How do I know working with a coach is for me?

Anyone can benefit from working with a coach, but to get the most out of this work you want to be in a place where you are open and ready to do the work. To do the work there needs to be a desire to make a shift, as desire is what inspires action.

When working with a coach, a coach can give you tools and help guide you but the only person that can do the work for you is you. Working with a coach means being an active participant in your life.

What if I am working with a therapist or counsellor, can I still work with a coach?

Working with a therapist or counsellor can offer amazing support, and as someone who has experience moving through complex trauma, it has been a necessary part of my journey and I have found it to be helpful. Everyone is different though and it's important to know how a counsellor or therapist can support you versus how a coach can support you.

If you are struggling with mental health challenges, working with a counsellor and/or therapist may be a better option at this time. However, everyone experiences life differently and has different stories they're walking around with. Some people may do better with focusing on their work with their counsellor or therapist until they feel more stable, or at the very least have tools that can support them through any challenges. Some may find great comfort and success in working with a counsellor or therapist while working with a coach at the same time.

The best thing you can do is speak to your practitioner to see if working with a coach is something that would be of benefit to you at this time. If working with a coach isn’t something you’re ready for right now, you can always put a bookmark on it and come back to it at a later time when you feel like it would be a good fit. The most important thing is you want to take care of your mental well-being first, which will help you experience the benefits of working with a coach later on if you still decide to go that route.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no straight answer for this as it can vary from person to person. Some things that can play a role are: how committed to yourself are you? What are you currently doing to support your well-being? What type of change are you hoping to create? Is this an area of your life where you have experienced a lot of challenges or setbacks? What does your current support system look like?

In general, when we are looking to create a shift or a desired change in our reality it takes practice, consistency and repetition. It’s like learning any new skill. When working with a coach every session allows you to dive a little deeper as you do the work. When you’re doing the work it’s natural for things to arise and having the support that comes with working with a coach can be really helpful to keep you on track.

When looking to book with a coach it’s important to look at what your budget is and what it is you are hoping to achieve.

In my journey, I have had experiences where I only worked with coaches for 1-session because that was all that was in my budget at the time. I didn’t see the success that I wanted to from that one session but I did get some a-ha moments and a safe space that allowed me to be seen which was valuable. Whereas when I’ve worked with coaches for multiple sessions during a longer time frame that’s when I would notice things started to shift for me because I had time to reflect and integrate the work we were doing.

Is life coaching covered by insurance/healthcare benefits?

Since life coaching isn't considered a treatment and it is not medically necessary, it does not fall under insurance/healthcare benefit coverage.
